On a Sunday morning in July 2013, Michael Ryan crashed his SUV into four vehicles on a residential street in Dallas, TX. Ryan abandoned his vehicle with his 10-month-old daughter still inside. Police found him wandering nearby and arrested him for child abandonment, failing to leave insurance information and driving while intoxicated.
Four years earlier, Ryan had also been arrested for driving while intoxicated.
Some early media reports ripped into Ryan for parental negligence. Ryan, however, claimed he was not intoxicated at the time of the 2013 crash, but had suffered his first epileptic seizure.
Two months later, a grand jury failed to convict Ryan, citing insufficient toxicological evidence that he had been intoxicated at the time of the accident. The charges against Ryan were subsequently dropped.
Despite exoneration, Ryan said damning media reports lead to social and professional repercussions.
Ryan said he again suffered a seizure during a job interview.
